Applications Engineer - Substation
Location: Duncan, SC
Salary: $70,000 - $88,000 Depending on Experience
Employment Type: Direct Hire Role with our Client
Travel: Up to 50% (typically around 25%)
About the Role
Our client is seeking a Applications Engineer to serve as the technical expert and customer-facing advocate for its substation accessories and connector products. This role blends engineering know-how, customer interaction, and technical communication, ensuring the client's products are properly applied, documented, and supported throughout their lifecycle. You’ll be the sole Applications Engineer dedicated to substations, working alongside a broader team of applications engineers focused on other energy segments.
What You’ll Do Day to Day
This is a hands-on, customer-facing engineering role with variety built into each week. Responsibilities include:
- Provide technical support to customers, sales teams, and internal stakeholders
- Deliver field-based and classroom-style product training for customers, reps, and internal teams
- Support RFx responses with technical input, product recommendations, and application guidance
- Develop and maintain technical documentation including application notes, installation instructions, and product guidelines
- Collaborate closely with Product Line Managers, R&D, and Manufacturing to support new product introductions and enhancements
- Act as the “voice of the customer” by feeding real-world application insights back into product development
- Participate in customer visits, industry meetings, and occasional standards-related activities
- Stay informed on competitor products, technologies, and market trends within the substation space
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for an engineer who is technically capable, comfortable with customers, and able to communicate complex concepts clearly.
Must-Have Technical Skills
- Substation design or application experience
- Strong technical writing skills (application notes, instructions, guidelines)
- Knowledge of substation connectors and bus connectors
- Experience with wedge connections
- Ability to perform basic electrical calculations related to substation applications
Experience & Education
- Minimum 2–3 years of relevant experience (4+ years strongly preferred)
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred (Electrical Engineering ideal, but not required)
